Ten students received $2,000 scholarships from the Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation’s Summer Youth  Leadership Program (SYLP). This is the first time the Foundation partnered up with the Boeing Company. As the main sponsor, Boeing underwrote the scholarship and also covered the expenses of the three-week program.

Boeing provided speakers and field trips in its plants. The Parks Department of the City of Seattle was also involved, providing the International District/Chinatown Community Center as the venue for the program. Funding from Boeing included a $1,000 donation to the community center for its projects.

Thirty-five  high school students enrolled, spanning from Puyallup to Bothell. Two were from Texas. About 12 alumi of SYLP came back to volunteer and mentor the new students. The two teacher-coordinators hired for the program were Amy Lu and Jeff Vu. The graduation dinner was held at New Hong Kong Restaurant. Started in 1995, the all-expense paid SYLP is one of the many community projects of the Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation.

The scholarship recipients are: Xiahui Huang, Bingjie Wang, Sandy Ho, Steven Cong, Greg Louie, Brandon Lee, Victor Lau, Wei Jiang, Lucy Dong, and Felicia Deng. ♦
