Photos by Catherine Anstett

Catherine Anstett, of Seattle, took both these photos on the island of Oahu, in Hawaii, February 2008. The photo on the left was taken at an open house and the photo on the right was taken at a roadside shrine.

Our ‘statuesque’ winning photographer

The Northwest Asian Weekly recently sponsored a photo contest entitled “Asian Heritage in Your Own Backyard.” The idea was to showcase photographs that depict a thriving Asian heritage in the less-expected places.

Our finalists, published in our May 24 issue, found their subjects at neighborhood celebrations, at open houses, walking along the street, and, quite literally, in their own backyard.

Of those worthy entries, our guest judge, Wing Young Huie, the author and photographer of “Looking for Asian America,” chose Catherine Anstett as the winner, saying, “(It was a) tough choice, but I choose Catherine Anstett’s photos. They were the most intriguing, compelling and surprising. I love the pairing of the statues that evoke so much and yet leave much to the imagination.”

Congratulations, Catherine! As first place winner, she will receive a cash prize of $200, a commemorative plaque and a copy of “Looking for Asian America,” signed by Huie.

Second place goes to Benh Kieu for his photographs of the Cambodian New Year festival in White Center and third place goes to Winston Ma for his photographs of his tranquil backyard.

Thanks to all entrants! We truly enjoyed every photograph we received.
