American Hotel Building, LLC has acquired the historic American Hotel Building in the International District and plans to provide workforce housing, student housing, and international hostelling once the current tenant and former owner, Union Gospel Mission, vacates the property at the end of June 2009.
Located at 520 South King Street, which is strategically located one block east of Union Station and one block north of Uwajimaya, the property was constructed in 1925 by Rainier Heat and Power Company as a single room occupancy (SRO) hotel to provide affordable housing to laborers working in the various industries of our region, from railroad and timber to shipping and fishing. The building is a four-story, 34,000 square foot, 90-room establishment with retail on the first floor. The retailers, some of whom have occupied their spaces for almost 30 years, will remain, including: A Piece of Cake (bakery), Redrose Angel (women’s accessories), Unicorn Crepes, Sub-Sand (sandwiches), and Oriental Travel Services.
American Hotel Building was upgraded and has been very well maintained by the Union Gospel Mission (UGM), which has used this facility as its Women’s and Children’s Shelter since the early 1980s. The UGM is currently constructing new facility, “Hope Place,” which is approximately twice the size and is well-located at their regional headquarters at 3800 S. Othello St. near Martin Luther King Junior Way South and the new light rail Othello Station. ♦
