SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A new poll shows that Asian American voters in California are solidly against a ballot initiative that would outlaw same-sex marriage in the state.
The poll of 1,891 likely voters released Oct. 15 found that 57 percent planned to vote against Proposition 8, while 32 percent favored the measure and 11 percent were undecided.
People of Chinese, Filipino and Vietnamese descent opposed the gay marriage ban by greater margins than voters with Japanese and East Indian backgrounds.
The poll was part of a national survey of Asian American voting habits conducted by researchers at four universities, including the University of Southern California and the University of California campuses in Berkeley and Riverside.
It had a margin of sampling error of 2.3 percent. ♦
